International assessments

In addition to the assessment procedures under national law in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, EVALAG offers international assessment procedures.

As a member of ENQA (European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education) and EQAR (registered since 2010), EVALAG is committed to complying with the European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG). EVALAG works independently and on the basis of internationally recognised standards. Therefore, all international assessment procedures are based on the ESG.

In addition to the legally binding accreditation procedures in the various countries, EVALAG also carries out voluntary accreditation procedures in accordance with EVALAG's international standards. If required, EVALAG co-operates with the country-specific agencies.

All assessment procedures are carried out in a peer review process with an on-site visit. After a successful assessment, the EVALAG Accreditation Commission awards its quality seal. The EVALAG seal for institutional accreditation and/or programme accreditation is generally valid for six years; the EVALAG seal within the framework of a certification procedure is generally valid for eight years. They are awarded on the basis of fulfilment of the relevant criteria and subject to their retention during the certified period. During this phase, the assessment report must be accessible to the public and is also published in the EVALAG database.

Regional focus

In the past, EVALAG has carried out assessment procedures at universities in European countries and in neighbouring European countries with a particular focus on the Mediterranean region. Currently, EVALAG does not offer assessment procedures on the American, Asian, African or Australian continents.

Programme accreditation

International programme accreditation means that a specific study programme is the subject of an assessment procedure. The experts involved in the assessment process are experts in the field of the programme and the focus is on the curriculum, its implementation and the organisation of the programme.

Institutional accreditation

Institutional accreditation is an assessment procedure in which experts analyse the quality management system (QMS) of a higher education institution. A functioning quality management system is therefore an important prerequisite for a higher education institution wishing to undergo an assessment procedure for international institutional accreditation. A QMS comprises the description of the most important processes in relation to the assessment and the subsequent reflection and decision-making. Most QMSs are based on one or more cycles, such as the PDCA cycle.
