Visit to TheSiMa

On 3 May 2022, three members of the evalag team had the opportunity to take part in a special tour, courtesy of the department responsible for university medicine at the MWK - we were invited to get to know the TheSiMa learning hospital.

TheSiMa (Themenräume-Simulation-Mannheim) is the skills lab of the Mannheim Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University, which was founded in 2008 as an institution of the Department of Study and Teaching Development. Teaching in TheSiMa is at the interface between evalag - Newsletter No. 26 (May 2022) 5 theoretical and practical skills in medical studies and is firmly integrated into the "Mannheim Reformed Curriculum for Medicine and Medicine-related Professions" (MaReCum).

Since 2017, the learning hospital has been centrally located on the campus of the Mannheim University Hospital. In the rooms of a former ward, 14 themed practice rooms are available for medical training. The subject areas covered include an emergency room, sonography rooms, a plaster room, a doctor's surgery, patient rooms and an operating theatre.

At TheSiMa, curricular teaching units and training sessions take place on simulators, with simulators or with tutors in peer teaching. In this interactive learning environment, medical students in Mannheim are prepared for the demands of their everyday work in practical and communicative terms and reflect on medical attitudes and behaviour.

In addition to these teaching tasks, TheSiMa also serves as a didactic laboratory for the development, piloting and evaluation of new formats in teaching and examinations as well as for university didactic qualification.

The medical director of TheSiMa, Professor Kaden, and his team, as well as the Dean of Studies, Professor Wieland, gave us a very warm welcome and introduced us to TheSiMa in the form of short presentations, small group teaching sessions and a tour.

It was particularly interesting for us to gain a more detailed insight into the teaching and learning concept of TheSiMa and its skills lab and to exchange ideas with the people responsible.

We were and are thrilled - anyone who has the opportunity to see TheSiMa for themselves should take it!
